Poland offers many impressive sights. From palaces to museums, concert venues to parks and much more can be found throughout the nation. Many of the sights are concentrated in such major cities as Warsaw, Gdansk, Wroclaw, and Krakow.

While Warsaw is the capital of Poland, many consider its soul to be Krakow. From St. Mary’s Basilica and the old Cloth Hall market in Old Town to the ruin pubs and Synagogues in Kazimierz, there is much to experience in Krakow. My 12-year-old son, Alex, and I learned this the fun way during a recent visit.

Exploring Wawel Hill

The crown jewel of Krakow is The Wawel. This is a fortress on a hill overlooking Old Town, complete with a castle, a cathedral and museums, all fortified by a protective wall. Wawel Hill is revered as the most important cultural and historical site in all of Poland.

The Royal Castle is among the most majestic royal residences of Central Europe. Having been rebuilt several times, the current rendition of the four-winged palace features an array of styles from past editions, from Renaissance to Medieval to Baroque.

Alex and I found the Royal Apartments to be less impressive than the ones in Warsaw’s castle. However,  there’s no arguing that the exterior of Wawel Castle is far more eye-catching, from its domes to its vast courtyard.

In the courtyard of the castle we noticed a group of travel-worn hippies collected along one of the walls in the northeast corner. They took turns standing against the wall in one spot, some of them hugging it, others holding their hands to it, still others seeming to meditate with eyes closed. 

Alex and I approached the wall, a dull yellow brown, and found it to be black in one large spot from all the pilgrims who’ve come to touch the wall.

“What’s all this?” I asked.

An American man with long dreadlocks answered. “It’s, like, a Sankara Stone, man.”

“Sankara Stone?”

“You know, from Indian Jones? Those holy stones from India with magical powers. There’s one in the wall. You can feel its power.”

The Mystical Wawel Stone

It turns out, this group did not represent an isolated incident. Thousands of people flock to the wall, believing it to have mystical properties. Some believe a Wawel Chakra, or Wawel Stone, is built into the wall, hidden away. This would be one of the five sacred stones fictionalized in the 1884 film, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Others believe that this spot is one of the Earth’s natural ‘force centers’ not unlike the chakras of the human body. That puts this location on Wawel Hill, in the courtyard of Wawel Castle, on the list with corresponding locations in Rome, Delhi and Jerusalem.

The local tourism authorities and employees of the Wawel complex do not acknowledge the existence of a sacred stone or force center in the Wawel. In fact, they seem to be a little creeped out by it. At one point during our stroll through the courtyard, we saw a museum worker encouraging the pilgrims to leave.

When we casually asked about the stone later, wondering whether it was really in the wall, the employee acted like he didn’t know what we were talking about.

But there are other religious experiences on the hill that go along with the culture of the area.        

More Sacred Sites on Wawel Hill

Wawel’s Cathedral of Saints Stanislaw and Waclaw is considered the spiritual center of Poland. Alex and I basked in the elaborately decorated interior, climbed the tower to see the Zygmunt Bell (the largest bell in Poland) and visited the tombs of Polish kings and royalty.

Also, on Wawel Hill are several museums. This  includes a “Lost Wawel” exhibition that digs beneath the ground to reveal buildings and artifacts from centuries past.

Our exploration of Wawel Hill took up the better part of a day. We entered through the main walkway on the west side, which features an impressive monument to Tadeusz Kosciuszko, a hero of both Polish and American independence.

But we exited Wawel Hill by descending a towered staircase into the “Dragon’s Den.” After walking through the dark and dank caves, we came to the fire-breathing dragon. Alex and I watched as the bronze statue breathed fire.

“That reminds me,” Alex said. “Can we try one of those grilled Polish hot dogs?”

We’d seen vendors grilling the Polish sausages and then dipping them in batter and deep frying them. Sort of a Polish corn dog without a stick.

“That sounds like a good idea,” I said, and we headed toward one of the many squares in Kazimierz for dinner.

Staying in Krakow

For long stays of more than a few days, we’ve had great luck renting well-reviewed apartments using Airbnb. For short stays, TripAdvisor and Booking.com offer spectacular deals on hotels.

Whichever route or combination you choose, be sure to consider the reviews along with location and price. Paying a little more to be in the center of the places you want to visit ends up saving time and money.

In Krakow, we stayed in Agnieszka’s Kazimierz apartment, central and cozy. Two beds, a living room, eat-in kitchen and a memory wall where Alex and I left our impressions of the city in marker. In the heart of the Kazimierz neighborhood, it was a 10-minute walk from Wawel and Old Town.

This also gave us the opportunity to mingle with locals in the nearby cafes, restaurants and pubs. Also, in the public squares that always seem to be alive with activity.

Think timeshares are the same as fractional ownership? You might be surprised to learn that it’s not so simple. It’s true that these terms have many similarities. In fact, they’re often referred to collectively as shared ownership. Still, there are significant differences between these two concepts. If you’re looking for a more extended stay in a vacation property, fractional ownership might be for you. Although very similar to timeshare ownership, there are some very key differences that make fractional ownerships unique. Keep reading to learn more about what fractional ownership is, see some examples of fractional properties, and to find out how to buy them.

What is Fractional Ownership?

When looking for vacation property ownership, you will find that there are a few options. A traditional timeshare is most often a vacation property or resort split into 52 weeks of ownership. Typically, most timeshare owners will only have a week at their property. So, what do you do if you want to have a longer vacation each year? Well, some people choose to buy multiple weeks at their timeshare or purchase enough points to use for either extended vacations or for multiple trips per year. Another alternative would be purchasing a fractional ownership vacation property, which gives fractional owners the chance to own multiple weeks.

Fractional ownership properties are owned by fewer buyers than how many owners own a typical timeshare. As previously mentioned, timeshare ownership is split into 52-week increments, which means that there can be up to 52 owners for that property. Of course, that isn’t always the case, but it is very commonly seen in popular resort destinations. Fractional ownership properties, on the other hand, typically only have 6-12 owners. By having a small number of owners, there is an opportunity for families to visit their fractional ownership property for 5 weeks or more per year.

As the name suggests, fractional ownership property contracts are split into fractions. Fraction sizes vary from 1/4 to 1/13, but 1/4 ownership is the most common among fractional buyers. Because the amount of time spent in these vacation properties is longer than a traditional timeshare, fractional properties are typically larger in size.

Buying A Fractional Ownership Property

Buying into fractional ownership means that you will be obtaining a deeded interest in that property. Each of the owners of the fractional property has partial equity in a valuable asset. Fractional ownership properties are usually either at a luxury resort or are larger vacation homes.

The fees that come with buying fractional ownership properties include property maintenance and management, taxes, insurance, and housekeeping. These fees make fractional ownership a bit more expensive, but they also give fractional owners more control of their properties. Paying for property management and maintenance fees also means that someone will take care of the day-to-day operations of the property. A property management company can also prepare the unit as the owner requests. These fees may add up, but owning a fraction of a vacation home is certainly more affordable than buying the whole property.

Freedom With Fractional Ownership

The freedom to choose how you want to decorate or maintain a property is up to the owners, unlike with timeshares, which the management company chooses. Of course, having more control of your property is a huge benefit, but it doesn’t always come easily. Choices about the property are to be made by all of the owners, so it needs to be a group consensus. This could be a lengthy process if some of the unit’s owners disagree on certain decisions, such as decor or housekeeping schedules. However, despite any differences of opinion, fractional owners tend to have more pride in their ownership than timeshare owners. This is because of the part that owners play in maintaining the property, which leads to them wanting to take better care of it.

Fractional Ownership Vs Timeshares

One of the differences when comparing fractional ownership vs timeshare ownership is the level of quality. Because fractional ownership properties are typically more high-end residences, they provide more luxury features and services for their owners. As a plus of being an owner of a quality fractional ownership resort, you receive accommodations and amenities that are out of this world. You also hold a high trading power when using a service.

When you are an owner, you have the opportunity to travel more throughout the year, or you can get some of your money back by renting out some of your weeks. But with all of these perks come higher annual maintenance fees. All of the property’s owners share the maintenance fee costs. It covers property management, taxes, insurance, housekeeping services, and maintenance and repairs expenses. While property owners retain ultimate control, the fractional management company is responsible for the day-to-day operations.

Why Book a Fractional Ownership Property Over a Hotel Room?

We get it, hotels are a tried and true place to stay that have existed almost as long as vacations themselves. So you’re probably wondering why you shouldn’t just book a hotel room for your next getaway. Well, the first reason comes down to size. Both fractional ownership properties and timeshare suites have a lot more space than your average hotel room. About triple the size, in fact! Not to mention, these vacation properties have far more amenities available than your typical hotel room. You’ll often have access to multiple restaurants, golf courses, and even movie theaters, all without having to leave the resort. On top of all these benefits, fractional ownership gives you peace of mind. No more worrying about booking a new hotel room each time you want to visit your favorite spot. You’ll have a luxurious vacation home waiting for you.

Fractional Ownership Properties

Fractional ownership properties tend to be larger units that have more amenities than typical timeshare properties. For this reason, they can be a bit more expensive for timeshare buyers. With that said, fractional buyers pay a higher asking price in exchange for more luxurious accommodations and better amenities.
